Choice Fund
Central Appalachia is now an abortion desert.
The Choice Fund supports abortion care in our region.
The cost of an abortion can be an unexpected expense that many people are not prepared for.
With an abortion care desert in the central Appalachian region, patients are now forced to drive hundreds, sometimes thousands, of miles to receive abortion care. These travel costs plus lodging, childcare, and more compound on one another to make it nearly impossible for people struggling to make ends meet get the abortions they need.
That’s where the Choice Fund comes in.
The Choice Fund is the abortion fund of Women’s Health Center of Maryland that helps West Virginians, Marylanders, and people traveling to Maryland for abortion care afford their procedure. Our goal is to eliminate financial and logistical barriers to abortion care by providing funding to any patient that needs it.
How does the Choice Fund help our patients?
In 2021, abortion funds received over 93,000 requests for funding. Those numbers are expected to continue rising as abortion bans go into effect across the country.
In 2022, the Choice Fund helped nearly 200 patients pay for their abortion care.
The number of patients who need abortion care will not decrease because of restrictions and bans passed by lawmakers, but the need for abortion funds will increase.
